The first book in the Juno Jones series by award-winning Australian author Kate Gordon (Yellow Brick Books, 2019), Juno Jones, Word Ninja is a clever junior fiction book whose lead character, the eponymous Juno Jones, connects directly with readers from the first page.
Juno’s school is under threat and her teacher is convinced the best way to save the school from imminent closure is reading. Juno isn’t convinced reading is the solution to any problem, but despite herself she is drawn into the appeal of storytelling, both as a reader and through sharing her own creative writing efforts.
I found myself wanting to read sections of this story out loud to people nearby. Juno is clever, quirky and full of personality, and her descriptions are overflowing with imagination. Word Ninja is an excellent story, hilariously told. The book is quite short, but the vocab suits either an advanced younger reader or a as a book read by or with an adult for children who might need some assistance.
I loved the drama of this story, Juno’s excellent imagination, and the interactions between the students in the classroom. This is the first of four books in the Juno Jones series, and I’m looking forward to reading more about the adventures of Juno and her friends.
