Melody Trumpet’s parents expect her to be a musical virtuoso. They are both international musical superstars, so everyone expects Melody to be musically gifted. In fact, no-one is willing to consider any other option.

Melody Trumpet by Australian author Gabrielle Tozer (Angus & Robertson, 2019) is a fun, at times pantomime-like story that has a strong underlying message about being valued for your own talents and abilities, the importance of friendship and connection, and the many ways people can express their creativity.

Melody’s parents are the self-absorbed villains of the story. Despite their best efforts to isolate Melody and force her to be a reflection of their own talents and interests, Melody manages to make friends and find her own voice.

An entertaining story for middle grade readers, Melody Trumpet is hilarious while also quietly encouraging readers to be true to themselves and to value good character and connection above superficial success and popularity.
