Frank’s Red Hat by Sean E Avery

Frank the penguin is full of ideas. In his monochrome world, surrounded by his monochrome friends, he dares to stand out. When he knits a red beanie that is coincidentally linked with an unfortunate accident, the other penguins decide Frank’s ideas are dangerous. Frank continues to create colourful beanies, but eventually he is overwhelmed by the rejection of the others. He decides to give up, just as encouragement comes from an unexpected source.

Frank’s Red Hat by Sean E Avery (Walker Books, 2022) is a fun story about being creative and thinking outside the square. The story is entertaining and the illustrations very appealing, with the greyscale and muted colours of the illustrations relieved only by the vibrant colours of Frank’s knitted creations.

Having discovered crochet as yarn therapy in the past few years, I’m particularly sympathetic to Frank’s passion for his yarn creations, the disinterest of his penguin peers, and the way his beanies and scarves connected him with others who appreciated his skill and creativity.

Frank’s Red Hat is a fun story about having big ideas, being creative, and not giving up.
