I read my first Hart of Texas story while I was travelling in late 2022. I was anxious about the trip for a variety of reasons and found it difficult to relax during the long flight. Kaz Delaney’s Hart of Texas cosy mystery stories were the solution to my nervous energy. The story and characters drew me in and proved to be the perfect distraction.
I’ve read the first two books in the series, Chocolate and Old Lace and Preserving the Evidence and I’ve recently started book 3, Candy-Coated Conspiracy. The books are set in a small Texas community of Airlie Falls and centre around newcomer to the town, Rosie Hart. Rosie is kind-hearted and generous with a knack for stumbling into the middle of crimes and mysteries that she just can’t resist trying to solve.
The stories are filled with characters that you wish you could meet. The mysteries are fun to solve with just enough twists and turns to keep readers guessing. There’s a wonderful thread of good humour throughout, and as an added bonus, Rosie’s interest in baking and sweet treats is shared not only through some tempting descriptions of her creations, but also with recipes included at the end of each book.
I attended a local writers’ festival event last weekend where Kaz Delaney and Pamela Hart discussed the cozy mystery genre. Pamela described cozy mysteries as stories where ‘the reader is safe in the pages of these books’ and I think that describes my experience with these stories perfectly. Spending time in the pages of a Hart of Texas mystery feels like a literary hug – warm, friendly, and engaging. These books are the perfect way to while away a rainy Sunday afternoon or relax with after a long day at work. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series and keeping an eye out for more Kaz Delaney books.
